Allen E. Ivey received his undergraduate education from Stanford (Phi Beta Kappa) and his doctorate from Harvard. He is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is currently President of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. He holds a courtesy appointment as Professor in Counselor
Education at the University of South Florida, Tampa.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, Dr. Ivey is a past-president and Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological
Association and is a life member of American Counseling Association. He is also an elected Fellow of The Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues of APA and the
Asian American Psychological Association. He was a founding director of the National Institute for Multicultural Competence.
His major scholarly focus has been on demystifying the counseling and therapy process and through examination of the interview has come a deep interest in multicultural issues in
counseling and therapy. He has been researching and writing about since 1974. Fulbright Fellowships to Denmark and Australia have been important in this development.
The originator of the influential microcounseling framework and the integrative theory, Developmental Counseling and Therapy (DCT), Dr. Ivey has won wide recognition and national
and international awards including A.C.A.'s Professional Development Award. However, he is most pleased and honored by being named a "Distinguished Multicultural Elder" at the
"National Multicultural Conference and Summit."
The author or co-author of over 40 books and 200 articles, his works have been translated into 20 languages. He did original work on the multicultural implications of the microskills
in 1968-74 and has been increasing his work in multicultural studies ever since.
He and his colleague/wife Mary Bradford Ivey are co-authors of the popular Intentional Interviewing and Counseling, now in its 6th Edition. They Ivey's have a new shortened version
of the original known as Essential of Intentional Interviewing. Allen is also co-author of A Theory of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy and the 6th Edition of Theories of Counseling
and Psychotherapy: A Multicultural Approach. Developmental Counseling and Therapy: Promoting Wellness Over the Lifespan and Developmental Therapy outline his comprehensive developmental
theory of counseling and therapy.
Allen Ivey's most recent writings have focused on "Psychotherapy as Liberation" and on generating a theoretical/practical approach for working in a positive developmental
frame with so-called "pathology" and DSM-IV.
His newest assignment is with a committee of the American Psychological Association defining competencies and practices for effective multicultural counseling and therapy.
